Radenovic hoping visit to Las Vegas will pay off
While he worked out inside McKale Center on Tuesday evening, Ivan Radenovic wore a Cleveland Cavaliers T-shirt and Los Angeles Clippers shorts.
There's no telling what he'll be wearing a month from now.
Radenovic is leaving Tucson today for Los Angeles to join the Los Angeles Clippers in preparation for their summer-league competition next week in Las Vegas. But he is signed only through summer ball, giving both the Los Angeles Clippers and Radenovic flexibility.
As a native of Serbia, Radenovic does not have to take up an import spot on a European team roster. As a result, he and agent David Bauman have already received several attractive overseas offers and will weigh them against whatever interest they receive from the Los Angeles Clippers or other NBA teams.
"I didn't get drafted but I have a lot of options as a free agent," Radenovic said. "There won't be a problem finding a team in Europe, but right now the most important thing is trying to make the NBA."
Radenovic said he would probably prefer to play in Spain if he doesn't stick with an NBA team, but is putting all of that out of his mind now. By mid-July, he will return to Tucson to mull over his future before heading to Serbia for a break.
Although Radenovic said he intends to keep Tucson as his U.S. base — "it's home out here to me," he said — he might want to consider doing some housecleaning later this month. After auditioning for nine NBA teams, Radenovic has plenty of practice gear to give away to family and friends.
"I've got my whole closet full of it," Radenovic said. "I don't know what I'm going to do with it."
Hill limited
Although forward Jordan Hill has battled a wrist injury, the Wildcats have been playing pick-up ball almost daily during the first summer session.
Some of the Wildcats have participated in the Tucson Summer Pro League, too: Former UA player Corey Williams said guard Nic Wise and wing Jawann McClellan have played the most but noted that recent surgery kept Hill out last weekend.
Although Hill has not been available for comment, UA coach Lute Olson said before leaving for Europe last week that the injury was nothing to worry about and assistant coach Josh Pastner said Hill has been participating in all required activities. Both declined further comment because of privacy rules.
NAU, UMKC
added Arizona has added home games with NAU (Nov. 13) and Missouri-Kansas City (Nov. 19) as part of the Kansas Invitational next season, an event the Wildcats will conclude on Nov. 25 at Kansas.
Arizona has one schedule spot remaining to fill for 2007-08, a Nov. 21 date in the Kansas Invitational against another mid-major opponent to be named. The NAU game will also serve as the season opener.
Quiet month
Except for the near-constant recruiting by assistant coaches, the Wildcats are entering what is traditionally their quietest month.
Most of the Wildcat players are leaving Tucson now that the first summer session is over, though freshmen Jamelle Horne, Alex Jacobson and Laval Lucas-Perry are scheduled to take classes in the second session.
While Olson is out early this month, his three assistants hit the road for the first recruiting period, Friday through July 15. Olson will then recruit along with assistants Pastner and Miles Simon during the second open period of July 22-31. Under NCAA rules, only three coaches are allowed to recruit on the road at any one time.
Kobe encounter
UA sophomore Chase Budinger was treated to a private workout with Kobe Bryant after participating at Kobe Bryant's Skills Academy last week at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif. He did not have to guard Kobe Bryant, however.
Trent Suzuki, Budinger's personal trainer, said Budinger played well in front of several NBA scouts against a group that included Wayne Ellington of North Carolina, David Lighty of Ohio State and Bryce Taylor of Oregon.
"They all had very nice things to say about Chase," Suzuki said of the scouts.
Geary extended
The Anaheim Arsenal officially announced it has given a one-year coaching extension to former UA aide Reggie Geary
, who took over the D-League club in midseason last year after Larry Smith was fired.
Geary, who was briefly hired as a UA assistant coach in the summer of 2005 before spending the 2005-06 season as an administrative aide, joined the Arsenal as an assistant coach last season. He went 13-12 as interim head coach.
"I am very excited about the future of the Anaheim Arsenal as well as the NBA Development League," Geary said in a statement. "I am both grateful and appreciative of the confidence shown in me by (team) president Jeff Jones and the entire ownership group."
Geary is an Orange County native who starred at Mater Dei High School before playing for UA in the mid-1990s.
